Learn to use patterns and silhouettes to make a picture in a picture. We’ll be drawing the head shape of an animal and filling it in with a landscape scene using only a felt tipped pen! SECRET WORLD OF CATS

The Secret World of Cats class will have you drawing impressive environments and crowds of cats as they run a bakery, go camping, read books at the library and more! WATERCOLOR THURSDAYS NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE

Learn how to paint animals native to our country. Using watercolor we will learn how to paint different textures of fur, wool, feather, and skin. We will also discuss the significance of these animals to different Native American tribes through their stories and practices. This class is recommended for artists aged 12 and up due to the use of intermediate art materials and concepts. Bring beauty and whimsy together drawing and painting teacups filled with tiny dragons. This class will focus on fine detail, shading, shadows, and color blending.  Betsy will be demonstrating with watercolor pencils, but you can also use colored pencils.  Either way you'll want a bit heavier paper for these compositions, because they'll be keepers. Realistic human faces are a challenge for all artists.  In this class we'll compare and contrast the facial features of the 7 members of Korean boy band, BTS, creating individual portraits of each one.  In the remaining 5 weeks we’ll work on a group picture of the entire band.

Learn how to draw traditional flash tattoos that have been used by generations of tattoo collectors -- Roses, Birds, Mermaids, Sailors, and yes, the classic MOM banner tattoo. We will learn how to break down these designs into basic shapes then polish them up with a clean outline.

WATERCOLOR PENCILS

Traditional American Flash Tattoos were first sported by Sailors and Military men to document their journeys.  They used heavy lines, harsh shadows and a limited color palette of Red, Green, Yellow, and a whole lot of Black.  In this class we'll draw, shade and color designs in this style using watercolor pencils.

Each class we’ll draw a different go-kart or motorcycle with a Super Mario character.  All drawings over the course of 12 weeks will be added to a single sheet of large paper creating a grand prix race illustration at the end of the term.

Working with characters from Voltron Legendary Defender, we'll practice drawing natural looking human bodies, then fitting them with armor, plus non-human giant robots. DEVELOPING PERSONAL STYLE

Fan Favorites takes a new turn as we move beyond reproducing to re-imagining characters suggested by the class. After drawing each character "on model," each student will be drawing one of the characters differently from their current appearance in order to cultivate each artist’s personal art style. During the final class of each month, students will choose one character to ink and color into a completed illustration.

Small Sculpture

Participants will practice drawing characters from Avatar, the Last Air Bender from different angles, then build small scale (up to 5 inches tall) sculptures of those characters. Steps include creating the armature “skeleton” to support the clay, building up the form with aluminum foil, then sculpting-baking-painting to finish the sculptures. Each sculpture will take 4 weeks to complete.

The Japanese word kawaii (rhymes with Hawaii) translates to "cute," in English. Each class begins with some basic practice of how to doodle characters, props, and space-filling decorations and patterns. Then the students will be given the chance to use their own creativity to fill an entire 8x10 inch paper with cute doodles, finally creating their own “Search & find” illustration on 11x17 inch paper.

The Art of Teaching Art

Looking for a few artists who want to learn or expand teaching skills.

This seminar series, supported in part by a grant from the Stockton Arts Commission, will consist of 6 monthly meetings, during which we will develop and offer 6 community art workshops. Each artist/teacher seminar will offer a teaching theory or technique for participants to explore as a group exercise.  Seminars will assume participants’ have well-developed art skills.  The seminars will involve brainstorming a variety of ways to break down, communicate, and motivate students to practice those skills.  Seminars will also include role play practice, allowing participants to experience both teaching and student roles. Seminar teaching topics will include
  • an overview of a basic 4-part lesson approach,
  • a variety of ways to implement each part (intro, breakdown, practice, create),
  • differentiating techniques for all-ages and all-skills audiences,
  • how Lead Artists’ experience and research can be used to enrich their lessons,
  • how to link/combine lessons to build an on-going class sequence, and
  • techniques for evaluation/critique.
Seminar participants will develop and lead 6 public workshops (free to the public) at the Teen Impact Center. The TV series, Gravity Falls, follows Dipper and Mabel Pines, investigating weird mysteries. We will draw, ink, and paint real forest animals, then use features from those animals to create our own mysterious creatures. Students with more experience will be encouraged to use detail and shading to add dimension to their drawings.

SMALL SCULPTURE

Dory is a fish who suffers from short term memory loss. The one thing she can remember is that she was separated from her parents as a child. With help from her clownfish friends, Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find her unforgettable family. In each class, we will be sculpting, baking, and painting a miniature sized character from Finding Dory out of oven-bake polymer clay. Each sculpture will have a magnet glued on the back to decorate refrigerators or other magnetic surfaces.

VECTOR ART

Samurai Jack tells the story of a young Japanese prince who duels Aku, a spirit of evil. This class, will use a free computer program to create vector art similar to the kind seen in cartoons like Samurai Jack. Vector art is created using mathematic equations and geometric primitives (points, lines, and shapes). It is characteristically clean, and retro looking without black lines. The biggest benefit of vector art is that it can be enlarged infinitely, without any loss of quality.

Yotsuba&! (“Yotsuba and!”) is centered on Yotsuba Koiwai, a five-year-old adopted girl who is energetic, cheerful, curious, odd, and quirky—so odd and quirky that even her own father calls her strange. In each class, we will study the expressions from a short story in the Yotsuba&! comic book and recreate the expression on a different character than the source.

The Boruto movie centers around the children of the original cast of characters in the Naruto ninja series. Each class will view a segment of the Boruto film, and learn an aspect of character design that was used in that sequence. This series of art classes aim to follow the ancient tradition of taking inspiration from cats to make art. In each class we will be using a photo of our own pet cat(s), or, choosing a photo of a cat from the internet, as inspiration for an art piece. Mediums will rotate through the weeks using pencil, colored pencils, chalk pastels, Zentangle inks, watercolor, and the computer to create cat themed art work and simple animations in an effort to introduce students to a wide range of materials and techniques.
